State level Seminar


Dr MV Shetty  College of Nursing, the pioneer Institute in the field of Nursing and allied science, established way back in 1980’s is celebrating the 25th Yr Silver Jubilee celebration. The college has a rich heritage of empowering innumerable Nurses both in education and service side who are at present  proudly upholding varied positions as Principals ,Administrators, Managers ,Superintendants in and out the country .From its rich experience, the institution has taken up the educational venture to impart “mantras” of Empowerment to today’s Nurses in Karnataka through the State Level Seminar, titled, “Empowerment of Nurses for Future” on 22nd July 2011.



The seminar was inaugurated by the chief guest of honor Prof Fathima D’Silva ,Principal ,NITTE Usha Institute of Nursing Science , NITTE University ,.Presidential address given by Dr M.Ramgopal Shetty, Founder secretary of Dr MV Shetty Memorial Trust in the presence of Prof.B.V.Kathyayani, Principal &  Prof Shanthakumari ,Vice Principal ,Dr MV Shetty College Of Nursing, and the resource persons -Mrs Leena K.C, HOD of Father Mullers College of Nursing  and Prof.Sr  .Lordana Korah, St Ans College of nursing, MulkiOther.

The dignitaries , delegates and organizers were warmly welcomed by Prof Vimala Prasad ,HOD of community Department , Dr M Shetty college of Nursing .The chief Guest , Dr Fathima D’Silva , in her remarkable keynote addressed  needs for empowering todays nurses She stressed that  empowerment should come from within ,and there is a inevitable need for a change in our attitude. Empowerment can only be achieved with effective collaboration  among todays nurses with mind set to achieve the best . She also encouraged to look upon Nurses abroad and the key lies in expertise in the service sector along with higher education. The Inaugral session came to an end with the  words of gratitude  from  Mrs Deepa Daniel, Hod ,Dept of Pediatrics .



The scientific session was opened  by Mrs Leena KC , at 10:30am,  unveiling  the broad scope of powerful communication skill in the work place empowerment  of nurses. She also caught the sole attention of gathering by  unfolding  the 10 ‘secrets’ of  effective ‘softskill’ ,business etiquette ,Yin & Yang  of listening skill with a win –win mindset and earned the applause .The speaker assured , in Indian scenario, nurses at the  educational side were already empowered themselves compared to service side .The fact lies in unbeatable knowledge  gained through Post graduate  ,Doctoral and Post-doctoral fellowship. The session received wide range feed back The forenoon session was followed by a delicious lunch with desserts .



The afternoon session was reopened by Prof.Sr Lordana Korah, Gold medal winner during her Graduate and Post graduate nursing,currently working  as the PG Coordinator  at Saint Anns College of Mulki, Mangalore .She enriched the topic “ethics in workplace’ with her unending  experience  fascinated the spectators for the next one and half hours that the time seemed flying.  She not only discussd some initiatives in the area for protection of nurses but also emphasized several important issues  ,such as raising awareness among nurses through education and training , risk analysis and critical success factors as far as ethics are concerned .She was stead fast in her view on abprtin , a bioethical issues to be discourages as it was religiously absurd.When asked how the population explotion would be controlled is no planning was suppored , she tactically tackled the question by replying the ‘means “ to control population is what matters . He did not forget to take the group in hands by reciting a poem

The third session began with the relaxation therapy by Prof Mrs KAthyayani , beloved  Principal of M. V Shetty College Of Nursing .She ,with her technique of taking students  within the 1st minute  of session ..She gave a brief introduction of the whole concept of seminar ie empowerment of nurses by projecting the revised ICN definition of nursing evidencing the shift from “assisting the doctor “ to “independent role of nurses” .She not only stimulated the group to acquire the qualities of an entrepreneur but also reminded the hurdles & barriers .

For the seminar a total of 182 delegates  attended. The following colleges constituted the majority Unity College Of Nursing , Laxmi Memorial College Of Nursing , Masood College Of Nursing , K .Pandiraja Ballal College Of Nursing , Sahyadari College Of Nursing , Alwas College Of Nursing

Apparently all speakers silently agreed upon the fact that  empowerment of nurses in  today’s scenario is inevitable and vital and we need a solid base by  collaborating  the discussed themes  . The extracts of the key concepts  of the day - Possessing  qualities   of an entrepreneur  , mastering excellent communication and softskill and practice of ethics in workplace  were set as   corner   stones to empower we , the  nurses .
